Retirement landfill fire may rage for days
17 October 2008 , 5:00pm
Executive Director at the National Solid Waste Management Authority, Joan Gordon-Webley, says the fire at the Retirement Landfill in Montego Bay could continue to burn for a few more days.

The fire, which started yesterday morning, was reportedly set by residents angry over a Jamaica Public Service Company operation in the community.

Mrs. Gordon-Webley says firefighters continue to cover and wet the site of the fire, but given the nature of the fire it may take a while to completely douse it.

While the fire fighting efforts continue, Mrs. Gordon-Webley says the landfill maintains normal operations.

The fire, believed to be the work of arsonists, has been burning at a section of the Landfill since 5 o'clock yesterday morning; creating a smoke nuisance for the town.

The NSWMA head said the company has reason to believe that residents from the surrounding community set fire to the landfill because the JPS had carried out an operation to disconnect illegal connections the day before.

Reportedly a fire that had earlier broken out at the Landfill was determined to be caused by an overload on their electrical system.

A JPS' investigation into that incident had revealed that some people had illegally connected to the Landfill's power supply.

As a result, the NSWMA Executive Director says JPS went into the Retirement community on Wednesday and disconnected a number of illegal connections, which angered the residents.
