McMillan reacts with anger to DC murder
17 October 2008 , 5:00pm
A Woman District Constable, who was assigned to the Lucea Police Station, was gunned down and her service revolver stolen by a masked gunman at her home in Kingsvale, Hanover on Friday morning.

The police woman has been identified as 39 year-old DC Venet Guthrie.

Investigators say their colleague was at home about 12:30 this morning, when a masked man with a handgun gained entry through a window to her bedroom and hled her at gun point.

It is reported that the man came across her police identification card and loaded service revolver while searching the room.

He apparently commented on her being a police officer and shot her several times, killing her on the spot. The gun man then escaped with her handbag and service revolver.

Minister of National Security Senator, Colonel Trevor MacMillan has reacted with anger and revulsion at the killing of the police woman.

Senator Macmillan says the killing was particularly disturbing, as District Constable Guthrie was killed in the presence of her daughter; allegedly because the hoodlums, who had broken into her home, found out she was a policewoman by her identification card.

The Minister says this heinous act demonstrates that hard-working law enforcement officers are continually being targeted by the perpetrators of criminal activities.

Senator MacMillan asserts that any criminal attack on law enforcement personnel is an attack on the law and order.

He stressed that the perpetrators of this brazen act of criminality must not be allowed to go unpunished and called on law-abiding citizens to rise up against criminals.

The National Security Minister has also urged the policemen and women who worked closely with District Constable Guthrie in Hanover to maintain their courage in these difficult times, and encouraged them not to be weary carrying out their duties.

In extending condolence to the family and loved ones of Constable Guthrie, Senator MacMillan said the Government was prepared to assist the family in any way possible.
